The subject clown exists in a state of routine and confinement, completing simple data collection tasks and sometimes being rewarded with an orange to eat. Despite the hopelessness of his situation, he finds ways of making fun and expressing his discontent, experimenting with the props and staging symbolic protests for the cameras he knows are watching. The work exists as a piece of software that reconfigures the order of scenes according to an authored structure. Each scene is then procedurally edited, alternating between cameras and sometimes switching register entirely - from filmed-theatre to intimate-cinematic, or vice versa. Far from the valiant heroes of childhood tales, these sheltered men retreat from challenging conditions into their insecurities; construct walls of words to defend themselves from one another. Their quest becomes interior and existential when they encounter consequences of their urban lifestyle that threaten their very being.The work takes cues from visual novel videogames, presenting the dialogue as a sequence of animated text boxes. The paper puppet characters explore collaged video environments. Micro and macro scale footage is collapsed, distorted and layered to construct scenographic spaces that enhance the textural and sensory qualities of the world they navigate. In the manner of novels serialised in literary magazines, the story was distributed sequentially in a still developing state. Each presentation of the story slightly reconfigures its individual pieces, as well as their spatial networking - here the comic was blown apart and pieces of it hung in the space; the film included a 6 minute ‘loading screen’ between loops and its start was periodically introduced by performances on the opening night.
